Muniamma was a marginal farmer who was struggling to make profits on her one-acre land and fighting to get the right price for the crops that she produces. She lacked opportunities to sell her products in the market due to middlemen and the exploitative nature of the existing ecosystem. Her input and transport costs were higher than the revenue. Muniamma barely made any profits and lacked information, awareness and the predictability to plan and make informed decisions.
Role of Commons Farm
Muniamma heard about the I Got Crops platform through her fellow producers. IGC is an online platform that builds farmer-owned value chains and enables the farmers to get a higher percentage of the retail value by providing a marketplace of professional services and products. Muniamma, through IGC, got professional services such as business planning services, training, marketing, and branding support, financial linkages and management services for running her business efficiently. Muniamma got all the required access to information and guidance to plan and run her business.
Impact Delivered
Being a part of the IGC platform, Muniamma saw a significant hike in her income. She was able to reduce her input expenditure and sell the products at a better price, leading to better profits. She could now plan to expand her landholding and venture into growing more crops. She could afford to have some livestock in her backyard. Muniamma is able to make an informed decision and plan her finances to support her family.
“Commons Farm transformed me from a helpless to an informed producer. I am now aware of the opportunities, more confident, and respected by my family and society. I feel empowered and feel responsible to help others in the same way.”
