A Planet in Peril
In an era where environmental concerns have taken center stage, the need to protect and preserve our planet’s natural resources has never been more pressing. Startling statistics reveal that deforestation is responsible for over 15% of global carbon emissions annually, contributing significantly to climate change. Community management that motivates volunteers to contribute towards sustainability plays a key role.
A Responsible Citizen’s Solitary Efforts
In the face of these global challenges, Maria, a responsible citizen in a Peruvian village, emerged as a symbol of individual determination to bring about change. Her journey began as a conscientious citizen eager to contribute to her community and protect the environment. She planted trees, cleaned up local parks, and educated her neighbours about sustainability. Yet, the magnitude of the environmental crisis demanded more than individual action.
Collaboration to Foster Environmental Change
Recognizing the growing need for community-driven change, Ciudad Viva, an organisation committed to urban green agendas, took a significant step forward. They understood that environmental transformation required collective efforts and a unified vision. To amplify their mission, they sought a partner who could provide the digital tools needed to foster this change effectively.
Placemaking
This mission resonated with Platform Commons. Together, we embarked on a mission to create a dedicated Placemaking and Community Management App. It has an interface that turns spaces into communities, encouraging citizens to participate and nurture the space.
The app serves as a digital hub for citizens like Maria to connect, collaborate, and take meaningful action to protect their local environment.
Transforming Urban Forests with Boskea
Maria and her friends have turned many urban forests into active communities. They have made these forests attractive to the otherwise uncaring citizens who are now taking forest walks, attending forest conservation events and sustainable forest parties.
Maria’s involvement didn’t stop there. She encourages her neighbors to enroll in various courses available through the app to deepen their knowledge about plant species, tree care, and urban forestry practices. She joined the Urban Forest Network through the Better Together app. This helped her in participating in discussions and collaborating with other volunteers. As the result, she could develop strategies for the sustainable management of local green areas.
